INDIGENOUS MOVEMENT

Indigenous representatives from the Ticuna, Kaiwa, Tucano, Kamayurá, Terena and Bakairi ethnic groups started the Indigenous Moviment to Support Life, reaffirming their role for social changes and their commitment to life. In their first meeting which happened in the capital city, Brasilia, on August 16 and 17, the participants debated que issue of infanticide and the Muwaji Law. They also planned for some strategic activities such as participation at the CONPLEI (a national indigenous conference) which will gather around two thousand indigenous people in Manaus during the month of September and the proposal to the text for the Muwaji Law to be presented to the Human Rights Commission.

Another important plan of action is a large public manifestation to happen in the month of October in front of the National Congress in behalf of the indigenous children. This manifestation will be a significant event for Brasilia where today live around 8 thousand indigenous from many different ethnic groups. In 1997, the city of Brasilia was the stage of a terrible crime that caused national commotion when five middle class youth set fire on Galdino Jesus dos Santos, an indigenous man from de Pataxó tribe, while he was sleeping at a bus stop. Galdino died.
