Hakani screening at the Brazilian Congress
Brasília, 19th November 2008
Dear Sir/Madam,
The Commission of Human Rights and Minorities has the honour of inviting you participate in a debate on the theme of the documentary “HAKANI”, which shows the reality of the Brazilian indigenous children who were saved from infanticide, on the 27th November at 10am, in the Freitas Nobre auditorium, annex IV of the House of Representatives. We would like to inform you that this event complies with the request of Congressman Henrique Afonso, approved by this Commission.
This Commission debated in a public hearing, the theme of infanticide in indigenous regions. The initiative caused great victories and counted on some advancements in favour of indigenous children with the main one being the acknowledgement and public confession by the governmental agencies that infanticide does exist and urged a need for the subject to be confronted courageously and maturely.
Give the repercussion of the discussions initiated and challenged by this Commission, the subject has gone beyond the borders and at the beginning of 2008, the North-American Hollywood film director and producer, David L, Cunningham, was in Brazil and produced the referred to documentary, one of the most impacting cinematographic documentaries.
The exhibition of the documentary has as its objective, to cause reflection on the work of those who are striving to save children from being sacrificed in indigenous areas in Brazil.
With your expected presence, at the debate of this important topic, we wish to renew our vows of high esteem and appreciation..
Respectfully,
Congressman Pompeo de Mattos
